Nurseries of Heaven

The Commands:
KJV Deuteronomy 4:10 Specially the day that thou stoodest before the LORD thy God in Horeb, when the LORD said unto me, Gather me the people together, and I will make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days that they shall live upon the earth, and that they may teach their children.

KJV Deuteronomy 6:1 Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it:
7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

There was a Baptist preacher (John Hardcastle) in the 1600’s, who, when he was in prison for preaching the word of God, wrote to his congregation: “You men and women make your homes nurseries of heaven.” [Hardcastle letters, Church of Bristol]

When I read this it gave me great pause. What a wonderful thought and advice.

Make your homes nurseries of Heaven.

—A nursery where food, comfort, security, nourishment; education, training are basics given to the young.

This thought should be applied by all of us. It might seem that to some; well I have no children or I am alone and this doesn’t apply to me. But yet it can.

We should make our homes a special place where the Lord is honored in our houses. Where God is never shut out in any area of our lives, especially in our homes.

  • Our homes should be where faith is practiced, and belief in God is solid and sure.
  • Our homes should be a place where hope abounds. How terrible when people become hopeless and discouragement and worry and depression is in every corner.  There is no place for joy when hope is abandoned.
  • Our homes should be enthusiastic with love!!!  If this is present and thrives then all good things will be found in that home.

Arguments, strife, anger, impatience, hurting and deterioration of the Christian spirit will all be conquered by simple love. Love of the family –husbands and wives, – parents and children, – between neighbors, – among the brethren,  etc. Love will tear down the walls grief and sadness.  And it begins with the love of God, and when that happens it will naturally spread throughout our homes.  .  .

I once heard the statement that if husbands and wives would merely simply treat each other as fellow Christians their homes and relationship will not be destroyed but established.

Reading, learning, studing and teaching the word of God is God’s formula to us to make our homes to be as a little piece of heaven. Consider the things of Heaven, and the things of God. Consider all that which God is and stands for and these are the things which we should strive to nurture in our lives and homes.

              We learn and are admonished:
Col 3: 12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;
13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.
14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.
15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

This is the essence of our homes being nurseries of heaven.

And as an after note but by no means a lessor truth our churches also should be nurseries of Heaven. What unbridle Joy would there be among the brethren, the assembly.
